- Background
Sean Effel is a community technology and community media advocate, serving currently as the Associate Director of Cambridge Community Television in Cambridge, MA. In this capacity, Sean works with the diverse population of Cambridge as the lead video and web media production facilitator at a world class public access television center. Sean leads technology trainings for digital video production, digital content distribution, website design and development, and most recently Drupal user and admin training.
Sean is also an associate trainer and developer for Creative Narrations, a consulting agency specializing in multimedia for community development. In this capacity, Sean has led digital storytelling and mediamaking workshops for non-profit organizations and their staff, and implemented Drupal in some interesting ways for NPOs across Massachusetts.
Sean's recent projects, training and qualifications include:
- As a private Drupal trainer, Sean has lead broad and targeted trainings for a number of interesting groups, including the Alliance for Community Media's national conference, a Chicago area police department utilizing Drupal intranets remotely in their patrol cars, and training researchers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in developing research oriented Drupal sites. Days are never the same in Drupal-land.
- Co-trainer in CCTV's Drupal Admin Bootcamp workshops with Moshe Weitzman, a training initiative targeted at public access television centers in New England to help migrate centers from their static web states into more effective Drupal-based states. Classes saw students enrolled from as far away as Philadelphia and Washington, DC.
- Staff developer and admin for Cambridge Community Television's Drupal-based website, featuring user contributed video media and social networking, as well as local and national advocacy on public access and telecom issues. Recent grant funding has introduced a new geotagging element for locally produced video media to display on a dense media map, highlighting the richness of local stories and perspectives in the city of Cambridge.
- Consultant developer for Coolidge Corner Theatre's film scheduling, marketing and ticketing system streamlining via Drupal, and also including a neat integration with Brightcove's new video content delivery product.
- Panel moderator in the Emerging Media track of the Alliance for Community Media National Conference, held in Boston in July, 2006. Workshops included Pimp My Site and Fire It Up, both evangelizing to the public access world about the possibilities of Drupal and other content and media management tools available to consumers on the internet. Presenters included Drupal developer Moshe Weitzman, videoblogger Ravi Jain, and Briana Martino of Simmons College.
- Moderator and panelist in the ACM Western Region Conference in San Jose, October, 2006. Sean presented in Dynamic Web Design for Community Media Centers as well as Creating Community Using Your Website, both providing demos of Drupal-based multimedia applications for NPOs to model. Co-presenters include access realm Drupal developer Jacob Redding of MNN, D-Production's Tony Shawcross, and Daniell Krawczyk of Princeton Server Group.
- Co-trainer in a series of Digital Storytelling workshops with Creative Narrations working with targeted groups of participants ranging from YWCA Boston's mission statement re-write, to Tufts University Peace and Coexistance Project's work with Israeli, Palestinian and Jordanian youth workers, to TEACHBoston's young teacher development programs. Digital storytelling's multi-day curriculum is a combination of community building, creative writing, content development, and multimedia production training.
- Drupal-based site builder for numerous clients through Creative Narrations, including Boston Public Schools, Cambridge College, Institute for Contemporary Art, Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation of Massachusetts, and PEGspace.
- Volunteer trainer and site foreman for local non-profits in need.
Sean has been leading technology trainings for years and has a great knack for teaching to diverse bodies of students, from young, tech savvy high school and college students, to the underserved and underrepresented urban segments of Boston metro area residents. Because of his background in public access and community technology, access to and training in current technologies, especially web based communication and distribution tools, are important points in his work.
Sean lives in Somerville, likes rainy days and long walks on the beach, and his favorite ice cream is chocolate. You may also find him running a world championship four square league in his spare time.
